Happy December! Here’s a merry little Christmas story.

A couple years ago, Janet told me that my next project had to have chickens in it. Guess what my next book was… Christmas designs! I was scratching my head. Chickens… Christmas… Chickens… Christmas. And then it dawned on me… The Three French Hens!

<img src='http://www.kaymackenzie.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/french-hens.gif' alt=''French Hen design" />
Here’s my Christmas chicken, just for you, Janet! (You can tell it’s a French hen ’cause it’s speaking French, dontcha know.)

<img src='http://www.kaymackenzie.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/chickens.jpg' alt=''Janet's quilt" />Here’s the very entertaining quilt that Janet made for A Merry Little Christmas to Appliqué. I call this “Santa Stops to Feed the Three French Hens.”

An even funnier part of the story is that while making the quilt, Janet forgot to reverse the pattern for Santa, so when she got the motifs all ready, Santa was running away from the Three French Hens. I can’t remember now whether she did Santa over or the chickens over, but eventually she got them all situated in friendly fashion.

Janet Locey’s website is Hen Scratch Quilting.

Until next time,

Pam’s at it again! My appliqué friend Pam Crooks has kindly made samples for several of my books. Here’s her elegant treatment of the poinsettia design in
A Merry Little Christmas to Appliqué.

<img src='http://www.kaymackenzie.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/poinsettias.jpg' alt=''Poinsettias on Point" />

The rich fuchsia batik creates a sumptuous holiday look. Pam used a prepared-edge technique, using glue to turn the edges of the motifs over freezer-paper templates before hand-appliquéing. The flower centers are yoyos! What a great idea.

Speaking of Pam, I wrote a post on my appliqué blog about Pam’s red-and-green AQSG study quilt. Over the weekend I saw it again. She’s now finished appliquéing the swags and it’s ready to quilt!

Also check out Pam’s Growing Hearts to Appliqué quilt here at the Show & Tell Center.

Until next time,

It’s an old chestnut, but why not? July is a good month for us crafty folk to start thinking about Christmas gifts and decorations.

I’m posting a picture of a fun little wall quilt that I created after my book A Merry Little Christmas to Appliqué was published. I call it “‘Tis the Season” and it’s 18″ x 18″.

This machine-appliquéd, machine-quilted, button-embellished, very cute project shows how you can put together your favorite festive designs to make a quick gift for a special friend (or for yourself) to put on the wall during the holiday season. The book contains a whole variety of Christmas-time appliqué designs in sizes that play nicely together. Besides wall quilts, they can decorate placemats, potholders, aprons, tote bags, table runners, mantel covers, and any other fun crafty thing you can think of.

And, the book includes instructions on how to make soft hanging ornaments using the designs.

During the month of July 2007, over at Quilt Puppy, A Merry Little Christmas to Appliqué is free with any other book purchase. Happy Holidays from the Quilt Puppy!
